What is a bone density test?
A bone density test is a special type of x-ray that measures your bone mineral density (BMD) using a dual-energy absorptiometry scan (DXA) to check for osteoporosis. It provides information about bone strength and calculates the risk of a fracture.
What happens during my BMD?
Before your scan, your height and weight is measured. Please let our staff know if you have had any spinal, hip or knee surgery. You will be asked to lie down on our BMD table and stay still. The entire scan will take between 10 to 30 minutes.
Do I need an appointment?
No appointment is necessary.
How much does a BMD cost?
There are some cases where Medicare will cover your BMD scan. The cost for a bone density scan may vary depending on a number of factors such as what your GP has requested on your referral. Our reception staff will advise you of any fees that may be associated with your examination.
Do you accept all referrals?
Quantum Medical Imaging accepts referrals from all radiology providers.
How do I prepare for my BMD?
No specific preparation is required. If you have had spinal surgery, particularly with metallic implants, or hip surgery (hip replacements, screws or pins) you will need to inform the radiographer (medical imaging technologist) carrying out the scan who might decide to avoid that area.
