What is an MRI?
MRI – Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a medical imaging technique that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body. It’s a safe, non-invasive and radiation-free way to help doctors diagnose and monitor various conditions.
How does an MRI work?
During the scan, you’ll lie on a comfortable table that slides into the MRI machine. The machine uses magnets and radio waves to capture high-resolution images of your organs, tissues, and joints.
How long will the MRI scan take?
Most MRI scans take between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the area being scanned and how many regions we do at once.
Do I need to fast before my MRI scan?
Most MRI scans don’t require fasting, but if yours does, we will let you know when you book. If you’re unsure, feel free to give us a call! If your scan requires contrast you will be required to fast for 2-6hrs depending on the type of MRI.
Can I have an MRI if I have metal implants or a pacemaker?
It depends on the type of implant. Some are MRI-safe and/or MRI conditional; which may need special precautions. Let us know in advance if you have any metal implants and we’ll make sure your scan is safe for you.
Will I need contrast dye and are there any side effects?
Some MRI scans require contrast dye to get clearer images. If needed, we’ll explain everything beforehand. Side effects are rare, but if you have any allergies or kidney concerns, let us know.
What should I wear to my MRI appointment?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal (zippers, buttons or underwires). Otherwise, we can provide a gown for you to change into. Please remove all body piercings and jewellery before coming in or in reception.
Can I listen to music during the scan?
For most MRI scans, we can play music to help you relax—just let us know your preference.
