Intro
Many patients feel uncertain about what will happen during their MRI appointment. Understanding the process can make the experience more comfortable and less stressful. This guide walks you through each step of a typical MRI scan — from preparation and arrival to what happens afterward — so you know exactly what to expect.
Before Your MRI Appointment
- Book your appointment. MRI scans require bookings. When scheduling, staff will ask about your medical history and any implants or devices to ensure MRI safety.
- Remove metal items. Before arriving at the clinic, please take off earrings, jewellery, watches, belts, and hearing aids. Metal objects can interfere with the magnetic field.
- Contrast preparation. If contrast dye is needed, staff will check for allergies or kidney conditions and explain the process clearly.
- Eating and drinking. You can usually eat and drink normally unless your doctor gives other instructions.
Arriving at the Clinic
Check-in process. The reception team will confirm your details and provide a short safety questionnaire to screen for implants or medical devices.
Change and store belongings. You’ll be directed to a change room to remove metal items and store valuables safely. Some clinics provide gowns.
Final safety checks. The radiographer will review your responses and answer any last questions before starting your scan.
During the Scan
You’ll lie on a padded table that slides into the MRI scanner. The radiographer ensures you’re comfortable and still.
The scanner makes rhythmic tapping or knocking sounds. You’ll receive ear protection or headphones with music.
You can speak to the radiographer through an intercom and use a call button if you need assistance.
For certain scans, a small amount of contrast dye may be injected to highlight specific tissues.
The procedure typically takes 15–45 minutes. Staying still helps ensure clear and accurate images.
After the Scan
Staff may ask you to wait briefly after the scan for monitoring.
Drink plenty of water to help your body naturally clear the contrast dye within 24–48 hours.
You can eat, drive, and return to work immediately unless told otherwise.
Receiving Your Results
- Radiologist review. A specialist doctor analyses your images and writes a detailed report.
- Doctor consultation. Your referring doctor will explain the results and discuss any next steps or treatment plans.
- Online access. Many clinics provide secure digital access to your images — ask staff if this option is available.
