New to MRI? Start with our plain English overview: MRI safety basics.
How to prepare for your MRI scan: before your appointment
- Food and drink: Most scans need no fasting. If your referral specifies fasting or extra water, follow those instructions exactly.
- Medicines: Take usual medicines unless told otherwise. Bring asthma, diabetes, or cardiac meds if relevant.
- Clothing: Wear loose clothing without metal fasteners. You may change into a gown.
- Contrast checks: If contrast is planned, you may answer extra kidney and allergy questions.

What to bring
- Referral from your doctor
- Medicare card and any concession cards
- Previous imaging and reports for comparison
- Implant or device cards or surgical paperwork if applicable
- Payment method if fees apply
Arrival and check in
Arrive about 10 to 15 minutes early to complete an MRI safety questionnaire. You will remove metal objects and may be given a gown. Our staff confirm eligibility for MRI and any contrast requirements.
During your MRI
- You will lie on a table that slides into the scanner. The scan is painless.
- Expect rhythmic tapping sounds. Ear protection is provided.
- Stay very still so images are sharp. You can speak to the radiographer at any time.
- If contrast is required, a small IV is placed. You may feel a brief cool sensation.
After your MRI
You can usually return to normal activities straight away. If contrast was used, drink water through the day. Tell staff if you feel unwell after leaving.
Getting your results
A specialist radiologist reports your scan and sends the results to your referrer. Your doctor will explain findings and next steps. If urgent, we contact your doctor promptly.
Safety and metal items
Remove all removable metal before entering the MRI room. Tell us about any implanted devices or previous surgery.
- Most joint replacements, plates, and screws are fine for MRI.
- Some pacemakers and stimulators are MRI conditional and require checks.
- Jewellery and piercings should be taken out. Gowns are available.
Have implants or piercings? Read our guide: MRI with metal: what is allowed.
Claustrophobia and comfort tips
- Ask about a support person or mirror aids if you feel confined.
- Breathing and relaxation techniques help you stay still.
- Speak with your doctor beforehand if you might need a mild sedative.
Fees, Medicare, and rebates
Costs depend on scan type, Medicare eligibility, and your referral. We outline any out of pocket fees at booking and provide invoices or receipts for claims.
