Intro
Patients often ask how long does an MRI scan take. Most MRI scans are completed in under an hour, though times vary depending on the body part, whether contrast is used, and the number of sequences required. MRI scans are more detailed than X-rays or CT scans, which explains the longer duration.
This guide outlines typical scan times, explains what affects how long your MRI takes, and provides tips to help your appointment run smoothly.

How Long Does an MRI Scan Take on Average
While every patient and scan is unique, here are the average times for common MRI studies:
| Body Area | Typical Duration |
|---|---|
| Brain MRI | 20–30 minutes |
| Spine MRI (Cervical, Thoracic, or Lumbar) | 25–40 minutes |
| Knee or Shoulder MRI | 20–30 minutes |
| Abdomen or Pelvis MRI | 30–45 minutes |
| Whole Body or Multi-Region MRI | 45–60 minutes or more |
These times refer to image capture only. Preparation, changing clothes, and positioning usually add another 10–15 minutes to how long an MRI scan takes.
Scans With Contrast Injection
Some MRI scans require a contrast injection to highlight blood vessels, organs, or inflammation. This adds about 10–15 minutes for the injection and extra imaging sequences.
You’ll usually be given a small IV line before entering the scanner. The contrast itself only takes a few seconds to inject, and most patients return to normal activities immediately after the scan.

What Affects How Long an MRI Scan Takes
- Body region: Larger or more complex areas, such as the spine or abdomen, require more sequences.
- Need for contrast: Adds setup and imaging time.
- Movement: Staying still reduces rescans and shortens total time.
- Preparation: Delays can occur if metal items, jewellery, or incompatible implants are discovered late.
- Additional studies: If your doctor orders multiple regions, each adds time.
Tips for a Smooth, Quick MRI Scan
- Arrive 10–15 minutes early to complete paperwork calmly.
- Remove all metal items before entering the room.
- Follow fasting or hydration instructions exactly.
- Let staff know if you feel anxious or claustrophobic—adjustments can help shorten the process.
- Stay relaxed and still once positioned; each sequence only lasts a few minutes.
After Your MRI Scan
When the scan finishes, you can usually change and leave immediately. If you had contrast, drink plenty of water throughout the day to help clear it from your system. Your results will be sent to your referring doctor for review.
