Intro
Patients often ask if they can eat or drink before MRI scan appointments. The answer depends on the scan type and whether contrast is used. This guide gives simple rules so you arrive prepared and comfortable.

Quick Answer: Eat or Drink Before MRI Scan
- No contrast MRI: You can usually eat and drink normally. A light meal is fine.
- Contrast MRI (gadolinium): Light meal up to 2 hours before is usually acceptable. Avoid heavy or greasy food for 4 hours before.
- Abdomen or bowel focus: You may be asked to fast for 4 hours. Follow the booking instructions.
- Always follow the instructions on your confirmation SMS or email. If unclear, call the clinic.
With or Without Contrast: Eating and Drinking
Some MRIs use gadolinium contrast to highlight blood vessels and soft tissues. It is injected through a small IV during your scan. Eating rules are about comfort and image quality rather than safety.
- Without contrast: Normal eating and drinking unless told otherwise.
- With contrast: Have a light meal or snack. Avoid large, fatty meals for 4 hours. Clear fluids are fine.
- Nausea-prone: Choose dry toast, crackers, or a small sandwich. Skip rich foods.

- Vascular studies: Light meal only. Avoid energy drinks before appointment.
Food and Drink Guide for MRI Prep
Encouraged. Small sips anytime. Helps with IV placement and comfort.
One small cup is fine. Avoid large amounts that may increase restlessness or bladder urgency.
Avoid on the day. It can worsen dehydration and nausea.
Avoid within 4 hours, especially if contrast is planned.
Fine for most scans. Avoid if you have to fast for abdomen studies.
Try to avoid before your scan. It can increase coughing and movement.
Medications and Diabetes
- Regular medicines: Keep taking them with a sip of water unless your doctor advises otherwise.
- Blood thinners: No change for MRI. Tell staff about them.
- Diabetes: If fasting is required, bring your glucose meter and snacks for after. Call us if you use insulin or GLP-1 medicines and need timing advice.
- Nausea medication: If you get motion sickness, you may take your usual anti-nausea tablet before the scan if approved by your doctor.

Common Questions
Can I drink water right up to my appointment?
Yes. Small sips are fine for all MRI types.
What if I ate a heavy meal by mistake?
Tell the radiographer. Many scans can still proceed. Abdomen studies may be rescheduled for best images.
Do I need to fast if I am breastfeeding?
No fasting for standard MRI. If contrast is used, you can usually continue breastfeeding. Ask our team if you prefer specific guidance.
